The COVID-19 Student WorkForce at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai: A Model for Rapid Response in Emergency Preparedness

Summary: Following guidelines from the Association of American Medical Colleges, medical schools in the United States switched to online courses and suspended clerkships due to COVID-19 in March 2020. At the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, third- and fourth-year medical students formed the COVID-19 Student WorkForce, consisting of over 530 medical and graduate students, to support the hospital system and provide volunteer services. The unique autonomous structure of the WorkForce allowed for quick mobilization of students for necessary tasks, leading to 29,602 volunteer hours recorded from March to June 2020 across 7 different task forces in 7 hospitals. The group plans to continue collaborating with other institutions, prevent volunteer burnout, and maintain readiness for a potential second wave of infections in New York City.
