Assessing the Utility of In-Line Intravenous Infusion Filters

John D. Ayres et al.

Summary: The use of in-line filters in intravenous fluid administration dates back to the early 1830s, but assessing the filter components, their interactions with drug products, and the impact on clinical outcomes remains a challenge. While some well-defined therapeutic settings may benefit from in-line filtration, the majority of observational studies do not provide enough scientific support for broad-based routine use. Ultimately, the decision on filter use falls on healthcare providers based on available information.

Understanding and Characterizing the Drug Sorption to PVC and PE Materials

Meriem Sahnoune et al.

Summary: Characterizing the sorption of drugs onto polyvinylchloride (PVC) and polyethylene (PE) materials in terms of thermodynamic adsorption properties and atomistic details is crucial for developing alternative materials that can reduce drug sorption phenomena and plasticizer release. Experiments and sophisticated calculations were used to study the sorption of paracetamol and diazepam on PE and PVC surfaces, with simulated Gibbs free energies of adsorption matching experimental interpretations. Furthermore, a molecular-scale characterization of the polymer-drug-water interface was conducted, exploring local properties such as density, orientation, and diffusion.

Association between Urinary Metabolites and the Exposure of Intensive Care Newborns to Plasticizers of Medical Devices Used for Their Care Management

Lise Bernard et al.

Summary: Neonates in the NICU are significantly exposed to plasticizers, with exposure varying depending on the type of medical devices used. The study found high levels of exposure to DINP via transfusion and infusion MD, and to DEHP via ECMO and respiratory assistance MD. The exposure doses exceeded the derived no-effect level by a significant margin, indicating a potential risk of toxicity from the metabolites.
