How can political liberalism respond to contemporary populism?

Summary: This article explores the incompatibility between populism and normative theories of political liberalism. It argues that although populism excludes others and opposes pluralism, certain forms of right-wing populism may advance the cause of liberalism. In exceptional circumstances, political liberals may be justified in violating regulatory norms that govern politics.

Summary: The moral obligations generated by socially constructed norms are rooted in the duty to respect others and give them agency respect. These obligations arise when existing norms are based on people's commitments as agents and do not conflict with morality. This view provides a superior explanation for certain instances of wrongdoing that would otherwise remain unexplained.
