Summary: This paper examines the interaction between the capture of monopoly rent through intellectual property rights and the capture of additional profit through monopsonistic labor markets, and their consequences. The analysis shows that struggles over the distribution of aggregate profit among firms have led to vertical disintegration of value chains, resulting in rising income inequality. The different forms of control over other firms in the value chain have affected firms' ability to capture value and generated differential profit. This has led to labor shedding and employment contingency, concentrating profit in firms with smaller headcounts and reducing profit redistribution among workers.
