Ecological-enactive scientific cognition: modeling and material engagement

Giovanni Rolla et al.

Summary: Ecological-enactive approaches to cognition aim to explain cognition based on the interaction between agent and environment. While they may not explain higher cognition, we argue that by studying scientific cognition, which relies on action and affordance selection, we can see that it shares fundamental features with basic cognition. By adopting a non-representational account of scientific understanding and the material engagement theory, we conclude that the explanatory gap is not as significant for the ecological-enactive approaches as it may seem.

Pragmatism, enactivism, and ecological psychology: towards a unified approach to post-cognitivism

Manuel Heras-Escribano

Summary: This paper argues that enactivism and ecological psychology can be combined in a post-cognitivist research framework by emphasizing the common pragmatist assumptions of both approaches. By highlighting the idea of organic coordination, which explains the evolution and development of cognitive abilities through the history of interactions between an organism and its environment, this integration can be achieved.

Radical embodiment in two directions

Edward Baggs et al.

Summary: Radical embodied cognitive science is divided into the ecological approach, which focuses on ontological strategies, and the enactive approach, which emphasizes epistemic strategies. By recognizing the complementary nature of these two approaches, we can gain a more comprehensive understanding of how behavior is influenced by the animal-environment relationship. The distinction between species habitat and animal-specific umwelt allows for a realist interpretation of the environment while acknowledging the phenomenal nature of individual living organisms.
