Neighborhood environment perceptions associate with depression levels and cardiovascular risk among middle-aged and older adults: Data from the Washington, DC cardiovascular health and needs assessment

Marcus R. Andrews et al.

Summary: The study found that favorable neighborhood perceptions were associated with lower depressive symptoms in a predominantly African-American cohort from resource-limited communities in Washington, DC. Neighborhood perceptions were strongly linked to depressive symptoms compared to objective characteristics. Increasing depression scores were related to higher levels of pro-inflammatory markers.

The Mediating role of perceived discrimination and stress in the associations between neighborhood social environment and TV Viewing among Jackson Heart Study participants

Kosuke Tamura et al.

Summary: The study aimed to test the mediating role of perceived discrimination and stress on the association between perceived neighborhood social environment (PNSE) and TV viewing. Results showed that each PNSE variable was indirectly associated with TV viewing via lifetime discrimination and perceived stress, while daily discrimination was not significantly related. Further research is needed to confirm these unexpected findings and to explore effective community efforts and physical environmental policies to reduce adverse neighborhood conditions and psychosocial factors, and decrease TV viewing and subsequent cardiovascular disease risk.
