Smell your self: Olfactory stimulation improves self-concept in Alzheimer's disease

Ophelie Glachet et al.

Summary: Research has shown a connection between decline in autobiographical memory and decline in self-awareness in Alzheimer's disease. Recent studies have also demonstrated that odor can help improve autobiographical memory in Alzheimer's patients. This study investigated whether exposure to odor could enhance access to self-concept in Alzheimer's patients. The findings revealed that both Alzheimer's patients and control participants generated more self-related statements when exposed to odor, particularly statements related to psychological self. This is the first study to demonstrate the positive influence of olfactory stimulation on the retrieval of self-related knowledge in Alzheimer's disease.

Odor is more effective than a visual cue or a verbal cue for the recovery of autobiographical memories in AD

Ophelie Glachet et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that odor cues are more effective than visual or verbal cues for retrieving autobiographical memories in Alzheimer's disease patients and control participants, leading to more specific, emotionally-arousing, and positive memories. Additionally, in AD participants, autobiographical memories were retrieved faster after odor exposure, indicating the automatic nature of odor-evoked memories.
