Economic vote and globalization before and during the Great Recession

Marco Giuliani

Summary: This study compares 168 elections in 38 democratic countries from 2000 to 2015 and details how the economic crisis modified and reversed the conditional effect on the economic vote. Additionally, the study separates the impact of economic openness from that of political globalization, improving our understanding of the triggering mechanisms in normal and exceptional times for the economic vote.
