Soft violence: migrant domestic worker precarity and the management of unfree labour in Singapore

Rhacel Salazar Parrenas et al.

Summary: The temporary legal status of migrant domestic workers in Singapore binds them to their employer-sponsor, giving employers tremendous power over them. Employers in Singapore utilize 'soft violence' as a tool to manage domestic workers, cultivating personal relationships while amplifying control over them. 'Soft violence' is a strategy employed by employers to maximize the labor of domestic workers, stemming from the paradoxical relationship of relieving and amplifying servitude.

Connecting care chains and care diamonds: the elderly care skills regime in Singapore

Yasmin Y. Ortiga et al.

Summary: The research discusses the globalization of care work and the connection between global care labor movement and local frameworks of care access and delivery, focusing on how the care-migration nexus produces 'ideal' care workers. Through a case study of elderly care in Singapore, it is found that state and private institutions adopt contradictory strategies when filling local labor needs by lowering barriers for citizens while increasing pre-training demands for migrant domestic workers.
