CHILD SACRIFICE IN TULA: A BIOARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDY

Summary: Recent salvage excavations in Tula, Mexico revealed a burial site with numerous children's remains, suggesting they were sacrificed possibly to the deities Tlaloc or Xipe Totec. The bioarchaeological analysis showed brutal anthropogenic modifications, such as flaying and decapitation, on the children's skeletons, indicating they were ritual sacrifices.

Migration, violence, and the other: A biogeochemical approach to identity-based violence in the Epiclassic Basin of Mexico

Summary: Bioarchaeological studies have successfully applied social identity theory to investigate identity-based violence in the central Mexican shrine site of Non-Grid 4 during the Epiclassic period. By analyzing isotopic data, it was found that a majority of sacrificial victims had migrated into the Basin of Mexico, indicating they were targeted for violence based on their divergent geographic origins.
