Sharing tacit knowledge in small-medium regional construction companies in the U.S.: the current status and the impact of organizational ecology

Summary: This study investigated the status of tacit knowledge sharing practice and the impact of organizational ecology on the practice in small-medium regional construction companies in the U.S. The findings revealed that employees consider tacit knowledge an important asset and are willing to share their knowledge. To improve the current practice, companies should establish formal procedures, provide more training opportunities, allow time for participation in sharing and codifying knowledge, and invest in enhancing internal communication and collaboration.

Through a review of 34 articles, the impacts of the pandemic on SMEs are identified as cost and finance-related challenges, disruption of activities, and existential difficulties. The paper contributes by highlighting the gap between the proclaimed beneficial impact of new technological advancements and SMEs' survival capabilities in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, and provides a framework of recommendations to enhance SMEs' resilience and responsiveness in this situation.

Summary: This study combines the perspectives of sensemaking and transaction cost economics (TCE) to investigate the role of contracts in tacit knowledge acquisition in R&D alliances. The research findings suggest that contract completeness has a positive effect on shared goals and weakens the positive effect of shared goals on tacit knowledge acquisition. The importance of moderate contract completeness for tacit knowledge acquisition in R&D alliances is highlighted.
