Are we all in this together? Gender intersectionality and sustainable tourism

Donna Chambers

Summary: This paper provides a critical discussion on the importance of gender intersectionality for sustainability in tourism, with a focus on the intersection between gender and race. It argues that Black women in tourism face a double negation caused by both sexism and racism, and that an intersectional approach is crucial for rejecting reductionist views and achieving equity in tourism development. The discussion is theoretically underpinned by critical race theory and Black feminism, using a storytelling technique to analyze the (re)presentation of Black women in tourism and their implications for sustainable development.

Reshaping gender in airline employment

Whitney E. Smith et al.

Summary: Air transport and tourism are interdependent systems where gender representations are shaped by organizational cultures. While airlines have made progress in gender balance, cabin crew work remains stereotypically feminine, with efforts mainly focused on the cockpit. Recommendations include broadening gender equity focus to all roles for reshaping gender policies and practices in airlines.
