Why the Circular Economy Will Drive Green and Sustainable Chemistry in Electronics

Michael Kirschner

Summary: Electronic product manufacturers have traditionally used linear product life cycle management processes, but as markets demand more sustainable products, there is a shift towards circular products that are more durable, recyclable, longer-lived, and less toxic. This requires new criteria in PLMP to drive demand for green and sustainable chemistry in the electronics industry and its supply chain.

Disruption in global supply chain and socio-economic shocks: a lesson from COVID-19 for sustainable production and consumption

Zhang Yu et al.

Summary: The novel COVID-19 has emerged as a severe threat to global health globally, affecting over 210 countries and regions. The outbreak of COVID-19 has exacerbated human misery due to the crippling of economies globally. Nearly every country is trying to prevent the transmission of this communicable disease. Remedial policies include testing and treating patients, isolating suspects through contact tracking, banning public gatherings, and asserting a complete or partial shutdown. The study aims to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the environment and energy market, society, economy, and global protective measures taken to reduce COVID-19 transmission.

The role of technology innovation and people's connectivity in testing environmental Kuznets curve and pollution heaven hypotheses across the Belt and Road host countries: new evidence from Method of Moments Quantile Regression

Hui An et al.

Summary: The study examines the impact of the Belt and Road Initiative on the ecological sustainability of infrastructure projects, finding an inverted U-shaped association between economic growth and CO(2) emissions, as well as an increase in carbon emissions in medium to high emission countries due to Chinese outward FDI. People's connectivity contributes to emissions while innovation helps mitigate carbon emissions in lower to medium polluted countries.

Resource efficiency in the innovative and conservative stages of a firm's evolution

Barbara Kalar et al.

Summary: Analysis of close to 1,200 firms from four European Union member states reveals that firms in the conservative stage are more likely to undertake resource efficiency actions related to saving water, energy, and materials, while firms in the innovative stage are expected to focus on sustainable product design. Surprisingly, firms in the conservative stage perform more resource efficiency actions than firms in the innovative stage, indicating varying actions taken by firms in different stages under similar economic conditions. Support mechanisms are also considered in this study.

Two-period supply chain coordination strategies with ambidextrous sustainable innovations

Patanjal Kumar et al.

Summary: This study examines a manufacturer with ambidextrous sustainable innovation capability selling products in an environmentally conscious market through an independent retailer in a two-period game setting. Five different contract types are studied, and it is demonstrated that a suitably designed two-part tariff contract can achieve coordination in a fragmented supply chain, assisting managers to optimize decisions based on the two-period contract model. The results obtained in this study can help decision-makers make investment decisions in ambidextrous sustainable innovation under different contract structures.
