I Have Guys Call Me and Say 'I Can't Be the Victim of Domestic Abuse': Exploring the Experiences of Telephone Support Providers for Male Victims of Domestic Violence and Abuse

Benjamin Hine et al.

Summary: Previous studies have provided evidence on the experiences of male victims of domestic violence and abuse, but current understanding is still limited. Little is known about how to support abused men and the challenges faced by both men and service practitioners. This study conducted semi-structured interviews with call handlers at a UK domestic abuse charity and identified stereotypes and expectations of men as a major theme that affected various aspects of the experiences of male victims and those supporting them. The study highlights the need for recognition, awareness, resources, and gender-inclusive services for male victims of domestic violence and abuse.

Internal and External Barriers to Help Seeking: Voices of Men Who Experienced Abuse in the Intimate Relationships

Alexandra Lysova et al.

Summary: This qualitative study examined internal and external barriers to help seeking among men who reported being victimized by their female intimate partners in four English-speaking countries. Online focus groups were conducted, and six themes representing four internal barriers (lack of recognition, relationship preservation, male roles, and excuses) and two external barriers (fear and lack of support services) were identified. The findings suggest the importance of gender inclusive approaches to intimate partner abuse and the need for professional training for individuals and service providers.
