The intra-urban residential and workplace locations of small business owners

Summary: This study explores the types of neighborhoods in which small business owners, particularly entrepreneurial ones, live and work. The findings suggest that some entrepreneurs prefer bohemian neighborhoods, but also emphasize the attractiveness of non-bohemian neighborhoods.

Non-standard work in unconventional workspaces: Self-employed women in home-based businesses and coworking spaces

Summary: This article explores the new production dynamics and workspaces in relation to urban change through examining a group of self-employed women starting their own businesses or freelance activities from home or coworking spaces. The study finds that work intensity, working time quality, and prospects are more related to self-employment status rather than working from home, while earnings and care work time are impacted by working from home. Profiles of home-based self-employed workers differ significantly by gender and age, with millennials showing significant differences from previous generations.

Workplace location and the quality of work: The case of urban-based workers in the UK

Summary: Recent growth in flexible work detached from traditional urban workplaces has heightened interest in job quality. This article compares job quality indicators between standard and non-standard workplaces. The analysis finds that urban-based employees working at home have good work characteristics, while self-employed homeworkers have lower job quality but leisure satisfaction benefits. Mobile working offers flexibility and job satisfaction, but also involves trade-offs and divisions in job quality. Driving/travelling jobs exhibit lower job quality characteristics, especially among self-employed urban-based workers.
