Problems with Centrality Measures in Psychopathology Symptom Networks: Why Network Psychometrics Cannot Escape Psychometric Theory

Michael N. Hallquist et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the challenges of using centrality measures in cross-sectional networks, highlighting conceptual and statistical problems as well as vulnerabilities in certain cases. The study emphasizes the importance of examining evidence for latent variables in network psychometric approaches before analyzing or interpreting patterns at the symptom level, as failing to do so may lead to identifying spurious relationships or missing causally important effects. Overall, the paper argues that centrality measures may not provide a solid foundation for understanding the structure of psychopathology when latent confounding factors are present.

Latent Variable Models and Networks: Statistical Equivalence and Testability

Riet van Bork et al.

Summary: Network models and latent variable models represent psychological constructs differently, and their mathematical equivalences do not imply equal plausibility; the constraints and interpretations in one framework may not have clear translations in the equivalent model of the other framework.

Not Positive Definite Correlation Matrices in Exploratory Item Factor Analysis: Causes, Consequences and a Proposed Solution

Urbano Lorenzo-Seva et al.

Summary: This paper provides a didactic discussion on the causes, consequences, and remedies of the issue of non-positive definite inter-item correlation matrices in least-squares exploratory factor analysis based on tetrachoric/polychoric correlations. The discussion is more applied than statistical, focusing on the factor analysis model and the connection to improper solutions. Solutions for preventing the problem and available smoothing corrections are described and discussed, along with a new smoothing algorithm proposed.

Detecting mental health problems after paediatric acquired brain injury: A pilot Rasch analysis of the strengths and difficulties questionnaire

Robyn Henrietta McCarron et al.

Summary: This study examined the psychometric properties of the parent-reported Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ-P) and its subscales in the paediatric Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) population using Rasch analysis. The results indicated questionable construct validity for the SDQ-P Total Difficulties Scale and the Conduct Problems subscale, as well as inadequate reliability for individual subscales and the Impact Supplement. Further investigation is needed to determine the reliability and validity of the SDQ-P in assessing mental health difficulties in the paediatric ABI population.

Network Analysis of Psychopathology: Controversies and Challenges

Richard J. McNally

Summary: Empirical publications on psychopathology using the network approach have seen exponential growth in the 21st century. However, concerns and controversies regarding the limitations of this approach have emerged, leading to the development of novel methods. Future research directions may focus on addressing these concerns.

Cohort profile: South Australian Aboriginal Birth Cohort (SAABC)-a prospective longitudinal birth cohort

Lisa M. Jamieson et al.

Summary: The South Australian Aboriginal Birth Cohort study aims to investigate various factors contributing to Aboriginal children's oral and general health, as well as social and emotional well-being. The findings suggest that intervention had a better effect on infants exposed earlier, but dental disease rates remained higher compared to general child population estimates at age 5.

Drop-the-p: Bayesian CFA of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support in Australia

Pedro Henrique Ribeiro Santiago et al.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the validity and reliability of the 12-item Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) for the general adult Australian population. The results indicated that the three-factor model (Significant Other, Family, and Friends) of the MSPSS demonstrated good fit to the data and excellent reliability, with initial evidence of convergent and discriminant validity.
