A Critical Review of Academic Literature Constructing Well-Being in Autistic Adults

Gary Yu Hin Lam et al.

Summary: The emergence of critical autism studies has led to a critical examination of how autistic individuals are studied in academic literature, but there is a lack of focus on the concept of well-being for autistic adults. By analyzing a systematic review of empirical research articles from 2013 to 2020, this study identified various approaches through which the literature constructs well-being for autistic adults, pointing out both limitations and opportunities for enhancing well-being and life possibilities for autistic individuals. The study recommends researchers and practitioners to engage with autistic adults critically and incorporate their perspectives to support well-being in meaningful and ethical ways, while also contributing to changing broader narratives of autism in research and society.
