Dehydration of d-fructose to 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural in DMSO using a hydrophilic sulfonated silica catalyst in a process promoted by microwave irradiation

Sandro L. Barbosa et al.

Summary: SiO2-SO3H catalyst with a surface area of 115 m(2)/g, used in a microwave reactor with DMSO at 150°C for 10 minutes, achieved 100% conversion and selectivity for HMF with a fructose:DMSO molar ratio of 1:56, and could be re-used three times.

Sulfonated Expanded Polystyrene Waste Promotes the (+)-Citronellal Cyclization Reaction: A Sustainable Alternative Process for Biomass Valorization

Maria Stella Palhares Ribeiro et al.

Summary: In this study, sulfonated expanded polystyrene waste (WEPS) was successfully utilized as an environmentally benign acid solid for the liquid-phase cyclization of (+)-citronellal. The reaction yielded (-)-isopulegol and (+)-neoisopulegol with a total yield of 80%, which have direct industrial application in fragrances and flavorings. The process showed heterogeneity as acid sites from WEPS did not leach into the reaction solution, making it a stable and efficient alternative for industrial reactions.
