Cardiac injury prediction and lymphocyte immunity and inflammation analysis in hospitalized patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)

Wenqian Zhou et al.

Summary: This study identified age, hypertension, coronary heart disease, smoking, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and blood lymphocyte percentage as factors associated with cardiac injury in COVID-19 patients. Additionally, lower T- and B-lymphocyte counts, CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell counts, and a minimal lymphocyte percentage < 7.8% may predict cardiac injury in these patients.

Association of coagulation dysfunction with cardiac injury among hospitalized patients with COVID-19

Liang Chen et al.

Summary: The study revealed the association of cardiac injury and coagulation dysfunction in COVID-19 patients, showing that cardiac injury is a common complication of the disease and is an independent risk factor for in-hospital mortality. Older age, high leukocyte count, elevated D-dimer levels, and high levels of AST and serum ferritin were significantly associated with cardiac injury. Interleukin 6 levels were comparable in patients with or without cardiac injury. The pathogenesis of cardiac injury in COVID-19 may be primarily due to coagulation dysfunction along with microvascular injury.
