Bicelles and nanodiscs for biophysical chemistry

Erick J. Dufourc

Summary: Membrane nanoobjects such as Bicelles and Nanodiscs are important tools for studying biomembrane properties, providing various membranous platforms for structural biology research. Internal dynamics of these nanoobjects is similar to liposomes, offering potential for studying the 3D structure, topology, and dynamics of membrane proteins.

Partitioning of Seven Different Classes of Antibiotics into LPS Monolayers Supports Three Different Permeation Mechanisms through the Outer Bacterial Membrane

Hannah Cetuk et al.

Summary: The study found that different types of antimicrobial agents interact with LPS in the outer membrane of bacteria in different ways, including no interaction, hydrophobic insertion, and electrostatically driven insertion. Specifically, the hydrophobic antibiotics showed substantial intercalation into relaxed LPS monolayers, while amine-rich and cationic antimicrobial agents were driven into the polar LPS layer by electrostatic interactions, increasing the area per molecule and supporting a self-promoted permeation mechanism through the outer membrane.

Interaction between tetracycline and microorganisms during wastewater treatment: A review

Quan Liao et al.

Summary: Tetracycline (TC) is a commonly used antibiotic in human and veterinary medicine, which is discharged into wastewater as parent compounds. The activated sludge processes in wastewater treatment plants are not effective in removing TC, and the impact of TC in wastewater treatment processes and removal methods should be emphasized.

Summary: This critical review explores the fate and removal pathways of antibiotics in biological wastewater treatment plants. Molecular properties of antibiotics are associated with removal pathways, but the influence of operating conditions remains unclear. Combination of different bioprocesses can efficiently mitigate the impacts of antibiotic pollutants.

Simultaneous action of microbial phospholipase C and lipase on model bacterial membranes - Modeling the processes crucial for bioaugmentation

Paulina Perczyk et al.

Summary: Bioaugmentation is a promising method for remediating soils contaminated with persistent organic pollutants, but the effectiveness can be hindered by enzymes secreted by native microorganisms. By studying the interactions between different types of phospholipid membranes and bacterial PLC and lipases, we can better understand how these enzymes affect model membranes and the potential resistance of certain bacteria to their activity.

Simulating realistic membrane shapes

Weria Pezeshkian et al.

Summary: Biological membranes exhibit diversity in their shapes and complexity in chemical compositions that are linked to many cellular functions. Simulation studies using a diverse range of computational techniques are able to capture this complexity at increasing levels of realism and connect the microscopic view on protein-lipid interactions to cellular morphologies at the level of entire organelles. Recent advances highlight the understanding of this complexity, identify current bottlenecks, and sketch possible ways ahead.

Structural elucidation upon binding of antimicrobial peptides into binary mixed lipid monolayers mimicking bacterial membranes

Daniela Ciumac et al.

Summary: Surface pressure-area isotherm analysis showed non-ideal mixing in all binary lipid systems, but it was thermodynamically favored. An increase in surface pressure leads to demixing, resulting in phase separation and cluster formation. Neutron reflectivity measurements indicated stronger binding and penetration of G4 to the DPPG/TMCL monolayer, suggesting greater affinity due to electrostatic interaction.

Perspectives on the antibiotic contamination, resistance, metabolomics, and systemic remediation

Kushneet Kaur Sodhi et al.

Summary: Antibiotics, considered as emerging contaminants due to their extensive use and persistence in the environment, pose a severe impact on the environment and lead to antibiotic resistance; various mass-spectrometry-based techniques confirm their presence in the environment, released through wastewater streams and runoff from land application; a better understanding of the correlation between antibiotic use and resistance occurrence can help in developing policies to promote judicious use of antibiotics.
