Trends and progress in AnMBR for domestic wastewater treatment and their impacts on process efficiency and membrane fouling

Fatima Anjum et al.

Summary: Anaerobic membrane bioreactor is an innovative technology for treating domestic wastewater, with fouling mitigation being one of the biggest challenges in achieving positive energy balance. Hybrid processes like G-AnMBR, FO-AnMBR, and MEC-AnMBR are being developed to improve treatment efficiency and fouling mitigation. Techniques such as quorum quenching and sensing, cell entrapment, and membrane module vibrations are applied for fouling mitigation in AnMBRs. This paper reviews the latest trends in anaerobic membrane bioreactors research focusing on water quality, removal efficiencies, and fouling mitigation.
