An overview of recent advances and applications of FT-IR spectroscopy for quality, authenticity, and adulteration detection in edible oils

Magdi A. A. Mousa et al.

Summary: Traditional methods for authenticity and adulteration detection in edible oils are time-consuming and expensive, while FT-IR spectroscopy, combined with chemometrics, offers rapid, precise, and cost-effective solutions for detecting adulteration and ensuring authenticity. Its ability to predict multiple parameters simultaneously from the same spectrum makes it a valuable tool for quality control in the edible oil industry.

An improved gas chromatography-based approach for characterisation of fatty acids in fresh basil seed oil

Tian Li et al.

Summary: An improved gas chromatography-based analytical method was developed for the simultaneous separation of seventy-two fatty acids, specifically trans C18 isomers. The method was confirmed to be high throughput, highly sensitive, and have a low detection limit, successfully applied to basil seed oil. Unsaturated fatty acids in fresh basil seed oil transformed into trans fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acids, and saturated fatty acids after heating, and the formation mechanisms were characterized.

Simultaneous Determination of Free Fatty Acids and Esterified Fatty Acids in Rice Oil by Gas Chromatography

Ken'ichi Ichihara et al.

Summary: The method selectively and stoichiometrically converts free fatty acids in crude rice oil to fatty acid N,N-dimethylamides and esterified fatty acids to fatty acid methyl esters under mild temperature conditions. The mixture of FADMA and FAME formed can be simultaneously analyzed by GC without the need for FFA isolation procedures.

Determination of acid value during edible oil storage using a portable NIR spectroscopy system combined with variable selection algorithms based on an MPA-based strategy

Hui Jiang et al.

Summary: This study used a portable NIR spectroscopy system to determine the acid value of edible oil during storage. Four variable selection methods were introduced to optimize the preprocessed NIR spectra, and SVM models based on different characteristic spectra were established. The results showed that the SVM models based on the MPA strategy had improved complexity and generalization performance, with the BOSS method performing the best in prediction.

Optical Detection of Inhibitor in Transformer Oil at Silicon-Detectable Wavelength Using Variable Path Length Model

Vimal Angela Thiviyanathan et al.

Summary: A new optical detection wavelength at 959 nm was discovered for measuring inhibitor concentration in transformer oil. Mathematical models were established for accurate measurement of inhibitor concentration at different optical path lengths, with average errors of 4.00% and 5.49% for fixed and variable path length models, respectively. The importance of variable path length measurement and the application of the newly discovered wavelength were critically analyzed for potential development of an inhibitor monitoring device using Silicon technology.
