Direct Transfer of Phthalate and Alternative Plasticizers from Indoor Source Products to Dust: Laboratory Measurements and Predictive Modeling

Chenyang Bi et al.

Summary: Phthalate and alternative plasticizers are among the most abundant indoor pollutants and can directly transfer from source products to dust, with various factors such as Koa, emission parameter and dust layer characteristics influencing the concentration and kinetics of this transfer. Minimizing the use of SVOC-containing products and regular vacuuming are effective strategies to reduce young children's exposure to SVOCs.

Determination of phthalate concentrations in paper-based fast food packaging available on the US market

Katherine S. Carlos et al.

Summary: Phthalates, commonly used as plasticisers, can be transferred from packaging materials to food surfaces. While typically found in PVC, fast food packaging composed of paper and paper board tends to have lower concentrations, influencing the analytical methods for their determination. Studies show that phthalates from fast food packaging do not significantly impact overall consumer exposure.

Simple method for determining phthalate diesters and their metabolites in seafood species using QuEChERS extraction and liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry

Miriam Hidalgo-Serrano et al.

Summary: This article presents a new analytical method for simultaneously extracting multiple phthalate diesters and monoesters from highly consumed seafood, which has been validated for seafood with different lipid contents. The method showed high apparent recoveries and low matrix effect values for all compounds, with detection limits ranging from 1-25 ng g(-1) dry weight. Five seafood species were successfully analyzed using this method, revealing concentrations of phthalate diesters up to 982 ng g(-1) (d.w.) and phthalate monoesters up to 178 ng g(-1) (d.w.).

Phthalates and non-phthalate plasticizers in Tunisian marine samples: Occurrence, spatial distribution and seasonal variation

Amel Jebara et al.

Summary: The study in several sites along the Tunisian coast found that plasticizers were mainly distributed in water, sediment, seagrass, and fish, with seagrass showing the lowest contamination and sediment exhibiting stronger pollution. The distribution of plasticizers was influenced by proximity to anthropogenic sources.

Comprehensive chemical characterization of indoor dust by target, suspect screening and nontarget analysis using LC-HRMS and GC-HRMS

Florian Dubocq et al.

Summary: This study aimed to comprehensively characterize the chemical composition of indoor dust using a combination of target analysis, suspect screening analysis (SSA), and nontarget analysis (NTA). Various hazardous organic contaminants, such as flame retardants, liquid crystal monomers, bisphenols, and pesticides, were detected through the analytical methods employed.

Polystyrene particles combined with di-butyl phthalate cause significant decrease in photosynthesis and red lettuce quality*

Youming Dong et al.

Summary: This study revealed that polystyrene microplastics reduced the bioavailability of dibutyl phthalate, adversely affecting the photosynthesis and quality of red lettuce. In the presence of PS, oxidative damage increased in lettuce leaves treated with DBP, while soluble protein and sugar content decreased. Additionally, nano-sized PS had a greater inhibitory effect on lettuce growth and quality compared to micro-sized PS.

Persistent contamination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and phthalates linked to the shift of microbial function in urban river sediments

Yue Liu et al.

Summary: This study revealed that heavy black-odor rivers have higher levels of PAHs and PAEs in sediments compared to moderate ones, with lower bacterial diversity. The presence of PAH and PAE degrading bacteria and genes was enriched in sediments from heavy black-odor rivers, which negatively affected nitrogen and phosphorus metabolism related bacteria but positively influenced certain sulfur metabolism related bacterial taxa and genes. These findings suggest that PAH and PAE contamination in urban rivers can alter bacterial communities and impact ecological functions.
