An empirical specific storage-depth model for the Earth's crust

Xingxing Kuang et al.

Summary: Specific storage decreases with depth, and an empirical model has been proposed to describe this trend. The model fits well with field-specific storage-depth data and is suitable for numerical models of groundwater flow and solute transport.

Permafrost Hydrology of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau: A Review of Processes and Modeling

Hongkai Gao et al.

Summary: Permafrost covering 40% of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau significantly impacts surface runoff and the hydraulic connection with groundwater. The degradation of permafrost due to accelerating warming is altering regional hydrological regimes, attracting interdisciplinary attention. However, there are still knowledge gaps in the systematic review of permafrost hydrological processes and modeling on the QTP.

Suprapermafrost groundwater flow and exchange around a thermokarst lake on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China

Zeyong Gao et al.

Summary: The dynamics of suprapermafrost groundwater play a crucial role in regulating hydrological processes in Arctic, boreal, and high-altitude regions. However, there have been limited studies focusing on these dynamics on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). This study observed soil hydraulic conductivities, saturated thicknesses, and related hydrological processes around a typical thermokarst lake on the QTP, revealing fluctuations in water table depths and contributions to lake water by suprapermafrost groundwater.

Role of Groundwater in Sustaining Northern Himalayan Rivers

Yingying Yao et al.

Summary: The Himalayas play a crucial role in providing water for around 2 billion people living downstream, with available water resources being highly sensitive to climate change. This study quantifies the spatiotemporal contribution of groundwater to river flows in the Yarlung Zangbo Basin, filling a knowledge gap and laying a foundation for projecting water changes under climatic warming.

Global groundwater wells at risk of running dry

Scott Jasechko et al.

Summary: Groundwater wells supply water to billions of people, but millions of wells are at risk of running dry if groundwater levels decline by only a few meters. Newer wells are not being constructed deeper than older wells in some places with significant groundwater level declines, suggesting that they are equally likely to run dry if groundwater levels continue to decline.

Mapping the permafrost stability on the Tibetan Plateau for 2005-2015

Youhua Ran et al.

Summary: This study produced a new permafrost stability distribution map for the Tibetan Plateau in the 2010s, integrating various data sources and employing an ensemble learning method. Validation results suggest it is the most accurate map currently available. The map is crucial for engineering planning, ecosystem management, and assessing future permafrost changes on the Tibetan Plateau.
