Contiguity and Structural Impacts of a Non-Myosin Protein within the Thick Filament Myosin Layers

Lynda M. Menard et al.

Summary: Hexapods and crustaceans make up nearly 80% of known living animals, exhibiting unique muscle types for locomotion and evolutionary success. Flightin, a myosin-binding protein exclusive to Pancrustacea, influences thick filament mechanics and muscle function by acting as a cinch in the filament core. The three-dimensional reconstruction of the Lethocerus flight muscle reveals the engagement of flightin with myosin dimers, suggesting a mechanism for ordered assembly and reinforcement of myosin dimers.
