Quercetin alleviates styrene oxide-induced cytotoxicity in cortical neurons in vitro via modulation of oxidative stress and apoptosis

Summary: This study investigates the mechanisms of cytotoxicity of Styrene 7,8-oxide (SO) in cortical neurons and the neuroprotective potential of quercetin (QUER). The results suggest that SO decreases cell viability in a concentration-dependent manner, while QUER increases cell viability by reducing intracellular ROS, decreasing calcium overload, and restoring mitochondrial membrane depolarization. Furthermore, SO-induced cell death involves apoptotic, necrotic, and necroptotic pathways, and QUER exerts its neuroprotective effects mainly through its anti-apoptotic activity.

Summary: The ethanol extracts of three commonly consumed Lactuca sativa varieties (Grand rapid, Lollo rosso, and Iceberg) show neuroprotective effects against 3-NP induced HD-like symptoms in rats. Among the three varieties, the ethanol extract of Grand rapid exhibits the highest activity. Further fractionation reveals that the n-butanol fraction shows the maximum attenuation of symptoms.
