How do low wind speeds and high levels of air pollution support the spread of COVID-19?

Mario Coccia

Summary: This study suggests that cities with high wind speed tend to have fewer COVID-19 infections, while cities in hinterland zones with low wind speed and high air pollution levels tend to have more infections. High concentrations of air pollutants combined with low wind speeds may promote the spread of the virus in polluted air.

Links between air pollution and COVID-19 in England

Marco Travaglio et al.

Summary: The study reveals a positive relationship between air pollutant concentrations, particularly nitrogen oxides, and COVID-19 mortality and infectivity. PM2.5 was identified as a major contributor to COVID-19 cases in England, with a 12% increase in cases linked to a 1 m³ increase in the long-term average of PM2.5. The findings suggest that even a small increase in air pollution could lead to a significant rise in COVID-19 infectivity and mortality rates in England.

Assessing correlations between short-term exposure to atmospheric pollutants and COVID-19 spread in all Italian territorial areas

Gabriele Accarino et al.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the relationship between atmospheric pollutants exposure and COVID-19 outbreak in Italy. Results suggest a moderate-to-strong correlation between exceeding annual regulatory limits of PM10, PM2.5 and NO2 and COVID-19 incidence, mortality and lethality rates across Italy. Findings also show a weak-to-moderate correlation in the most affected regions, with PM10 and PM2.5 showing higher non-linear correlation than NO2.
