Observational learning and irreversible starvation in first-feeding zebrafish larvae: is it okay to copy from your friends?

Emma C. Lucore et al.

Summary: Starvation is a major cause of high mortality in early life stages of fish species. Zebrafish larvae learn to feed through observing conspecifics or previous experience with prey items, with exposure to prey immediately after hatching resulting in highest survival rates. Feeding ability in zebrafish larvae is a learned behavior, and interacting with/observing conspecifics is a better predictor of feeding ability than previous experience with food.
