Efficacy of N-acetylcysteine in the prevention of alcohol relapse-like drinking: Study in long-term ethanol-experienced male rats

Maria Jose Cano-Cebrian et al.

Summary: The study found that NAC administered subcutaneously, either through continuous infusion or intermittent injections, effectively blocked the alcohol deprivation effect (ADE) in long-term experienced rats, with the best results obtained from the 60 mg/kg dose. These findings suggest that NAC may be a valuable therapy in managing alcohol relapse.

N-acetylcysteine as a new prominent approach for treating psychiatric disorders

Irena Smaga et al.

Summary: N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a well-known mucolytic agent that has shown beneficial effects on different psychiatric disorders. It exerts its effects through regulating neurotransmitters, oxidative balance, and inflammatory mediators. While preclinical studies have shown positive results, further research is needed to establish the clinical efficacy of NAC for psychiatric disorders.

Novel Glutamatergic Modulators for the Treatment of Mood Disorders: Current Status

Ioline D. Henter et al.

Summary: The efficacy of standard antidepressants is limited for many patients with mood disorders, highlighting the urgent need for novel therapeutics. Both clinical and preclinical studies have suggested dysfunction in the glutamatergic system plays a role in the pathophysiology of mood disorders, with ketamine and similar glutamatergic modulators showing rapid reduction in depressive symptoms.

Clinical Characteristics, Outcomes, Disposition, and Acute Care of Children and Adolescents Treated for Acetaminophen Toxicity

Julia Shekunov et al.

Summary: Acetaminophen overdose is common among children and adolescents, with the majority intentional. Psychiatric comorbidities and substance use were prevalent, leading to the need for both medical and psychiatric treatment in emergency settings. Interventions to restrict acetaminophen access and reduce suicide risk are necessary for this population.

Massive acetaminophen overdose with metabolic acidosis refractory to N-acetylcysteine, fomepizole, and renal replacement therapy

Sean Cuninghame et al.

Summary: Massive Acetaminophen overdose is common in emergency departments worldwide, with NAC being the main treatment. In cases with altered mental status and metabolic acidosis, renal replacement therapy may be beneficial. Further research is needed to determine the optimal method and timing of renal replacement therapy in managing massive APAP overdose.
