A new aminoglycoside etimicin shows low nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity in zebrafish embryos

Weihao Shao et al.

Summary: The study compared the toxic effects of three aminoglycoside antibiotics on zebrafish embryos, revealing that etimicin and amikacin exhibit more developmental toxicities to young embryos but show reduced toxicities to kidney and neuromast hair cells at subtoxic doses. It was further demonstrated that etimicin is a new aminoglycoside with reduced risks of nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity compared to gentamicin.

Erythromycin in the aquatic environment: deleterious effects on the initial development of zebrafish

Valeska Toffolo Minski et al.

Summary: The presence of erythromycin in the environment can have serious consequences on fish development, such as delayed hatching, reduced survival rate, increased heart rate, and enhanced swimming activity. These effects highlight the potential ecological imbalance that may result from erythromycin exposure in aquatic environments.

The effect of sulfamethoxazole on oxidative stress indices in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Nina Tokanova et al.

Summary: The study found that under experimental conditions, exposure of zebrafish to sulfamethoxazole resulted in a slight increase in lipid peroxidation but no significant changes in antioxidant enzyme activity. Additionally, lipid peroxidation gradually increased in the experimental groups exposed to sulfamethoxazole, indicating increased cell membrane damage.

Oregano (Origanum vulgare) Extract Enhances Zebrafish (Danio rerio) Growth Performance, Serum and Mucus Innate Immune Responses and Resistance against Aeromonas hydrophila Challenge

Ghasem Rashidian et al.

Summary: The study found that oregano extract has significant effects on the growth and immune system of zebrafish, improving their antioxidant response and survival rate against bacterial invasion. Zebrafish showed the greatest benefits with 1% dietary inclusion of the extract, suggesting the potential use of Origanum vulgare in the aquaculture industry and zebrafish as an appropriate model for nutrition studies.

Antibiotic drugs alter zebrafish behavior

Barbara Dutra Petersen et al.

Summary: Antibiotics are widely used in human and veterinary health along with the food industry, resulting in their presence as contaminants in water bodies. This study reveals that exposure to certain antibiotics led to hyperlocomotion, cognitive decline, and exacerbated aggressive behavior in adult zebrafish, indicating a short-term impact on their behavior.

In vivo and in silico evaluations of survival and cardiac developmental toxicity of quinolone antibiotics in zebrafish embryos (Danio rerio)

Ying Han et al.

Summary: Quinolones are the second most commonly used antibiotics in China, but they have adverse effects on both clinical and environmental aspects. This study explores the relationship between different quinolone structures and toxicity in zebrafish embryos. The research indicates that quinolones exhibit cardiac developmental toxicity potential in a dose-dependent manner, with specific structural elements affecting toxicity levels.

Androgenic activation, impairment of the monoaminergic system and altered behavior in zebrafish larvae exposed to environmental concentrations of fenitrothion

Melissa Faria et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that exposure to environmental concentrations of Fenitrothion can induce neurotoxic effects in zebrafish larvae, impacting their basal locomotor activity, visual-motor response, and acoustic/vibrational escape response. Significant non-monotonic concentration-response relationships were observed for Fenitrothion and the expression of certain genes. Furthermore, potential protein targets of Fenitrothion were identified, with interactions with acetylcholinesterase, monoamine-oxidases, and androgen receptor being experimentally validated, suggesting an environmental risk for fish communities.
