Profiles of Nicotine and Cannabis Exposure among Young Adults with Asthma

Ashley H. Clawson et al.

Summary: This study investigates nicotine and cannabis use among young adults with asthma and identifies potential patterns of use. The study finds high rates of nicotine and cannabis use among this population and identifies different classes of use. The findings highlight the need to address environmental and active exposure to tobacco and marijuana among young adults with asthma.

The relationship between asthma diagnosis and E-Cigarette use among youth and young adults: the mediation effects of anxiety, depression, and impulsivity and the moderation effects of substance use

Abdullah M. M. Alanazi et al.

Summary: The study found that youth and young adults with asthma were less susceptible to e-cigarette use, and anxiety, depression, and impulsivity were not significant mediators of the relationships between asthma and susceptibility to e-cigarette use. However, the frequency of cannabis use in the past 30 days could moderate the relationship between asthma and susceptibility to e-cigarette use.

Pulmonary Health Effects of Electronic Cigarettes: A Scoping Review

Emma Gugala et al.

Summary: This scoping review examined the pulmonary health effects of electronic cigarettes reported in the literature from 2009 to 2019. The results indicated that electronic cigarette use is associated with respiratory symptoms, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, particularly dual use, leading to negative pulmonary effects and adverse outcomes.

Examining electronic nicotine delivery system use and perception of use among college students with and without asthma across the South

Linda Gibson-Young et al.

Summary: This study aims to examine the demographic differences in ENDS use among college students with and without asthma, as well as the relationship between perceived health status and perception of harm. The survey results show that a significant number of college students perceive ENDS vapor to be less harmful than traditional cigarette smoke. However, there is a lack of knowledge and awareness regarding nicotine among college students, especially those with underlying respiratory conditions.

Is e-cigarette use in non-smoking young adults associated with later smoking? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Jasmine N. Khouja et al.

Summary: The study found that young non-smokers who use e-cigarettes are more likely to start smoking later on, with strong evidence supporting the association. However, the evidence is limited by reliance on self-report measures and lack of consideration for nicotine content, requiring further research to explore this relationship.

Characterizing e-cigarette vaping-associated lung injury in the pediatric intensive care unit

Anireddy Reddy et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics, treatment, and outcomes of 6 EVALI patients treated in the pediatric intensive care unit. All patients reported using tetrahydrocannabinol and nicotine e-cigarettes, with half of them having a history of asthma and four patients having mental health comorbidities. Patients presented with respiratory alkalosis and chest radiography showing diffuse bilateral infiltrates, requiring noninvasive positive pressure ventilation with some progressing to invasive ventilation.

E-cigarette users are associated with asthma disease: A meta-analysis

Shaojing Xian et al.

Summary: In this meta-analysis, it was found that current or former use of e-cigarettes is associated with the prevalence of asthma, particularly when used in combination with traditional cigarettes. Adult and female e-cigarette users are more closely associated with asthma. Further research with more rigorous design is needed to verify the specific relationship.

Binge Drinking Moderates the Association Between Chronic Lung Disease and E-Cigarette Use

Mohammed M. Alqahtani et al.

Summary: The study found that adults with chronic lung disease were more likely to use e-cigarettes than those without. Moreover, more frequent binge drinking was associated with a higher likelihood of lifetime e-cigarette use, independent of chronic lung disease status. Binge drinking moderated the relationship between chronic lung disease and e-cigarette use, weakening the association among those who engaged in more episodes of binge drinking.
