Cysteine: an overlooked energy and carbon source

Luise Goebbels et al.

Summary: Biohybrids composed of anaerobic acetogenic bacterium and cadmium sulphide nanoparticles show metabolism independent of light or CdS, with CdS cells displaying higher metabolic activity linked to arginine metabolism. Different routes of cysteine metabolism by the model acetogen and intracellular mechanisms triggered by cysteine, cadmium, or blue light are identified.

In situ construction of Z-scheme FeS2/Fe2O3 photocatalyst via structural transformation of pyrite for photocatalytic degradation of carbamazepine and the synergistic reduction of Cr(VI)

Qian Guo et al.

Summary: A Z-scheme FeS2/Fe2O3 composite photocatalyst was fabricated through heat treatment, showing significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance and high degradation efficiency towards carbamazepine (CBZ). The improved photocatalytic activity was attributed to the efficient separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers in the composite photocatalyst.

Acetogenic bacteria utilize light-driven electrons as an energy source for autotrophic growth

Sangrak Jin et al.

Summary: A hybrid system has been developed that can convert CO2 into acetate using light-induced electrons without the need for additional energy sources. Genes encoding metal ion or flavin-binding proteins were up-regulated under CdS-driven autotrophic conditions, along with activation of genes related to the WL pathway and energy conservation system, increasing the CO2 fixation rate under light exposure. The results demonstrate the potential to improve the efficiency of artificial photosynthesis systems based on acetogenic bacteria integrated with photoresponsive nanoparticles.
