Computational prediction and experimental evaluation of nitrate reduction to ammonia on rhodium

Yangge Guo et al.

Summary: Using density functional theory combined with implicit continuum solvation model, we predicted the reaction energetics for nitrate reduction on rhodium surfaces in alkaline media. The results showed that Rh(110) and Rh(100) exhibited different activity and selectivity for nitrate reduction at different potential ranges.

Understanding the Factors Determining the Faradaic Efficiency and Rate of the Lithium Redox-Mediated N2 Reduction to Ammonia

Pavel Cherepanov et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of parameters such as electrode potential, convection, N-2 pressure, and water content on the electrochemical production of ammonia. Results showed that a closely linear ammonia yield and approximately constant faradaic efficiency can be maintained during experiments lasting up to 60 hours. Improved control of reaction conditions led to ammonia yield rates above 1 nmol s(-1) cm(-2) and faradaic efficiencies as high as 60%.

Interaction of Ammonia with Nafion and Electrolyte in Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction Study

Xiyang Cai et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigated the interaction of ammonia with Nafion membrane and electrolyte to reveal factors that may induce deviation in ammonia measurements. Desirable characteristics of Nafion membrane as a separator were demonstrated, but possible contaminants pre-existing in the membrane should be noted. It was observed that acid electrolyte had a much greater affinity for ammonia compared with base electrolyte, highlighting the different behaviors of acid and base electrolytes in the ammonia synthesis process.

Nitrogen reduction to ammonia at high efficiency and rates based on a phosphonium proton shuttle

Bryan H. R. Suryanto et al.

Summary: Ammonia (NH3) is a globally important commodity for fertilizer production, but its synthesis by the Haber-Bosch process causes substantial emissions of carbon dioxide. Alternative methods being explored include the promising electrochemical lithium-mediated nitrogen reduction reaction, which has required sacrificial sources of protons. In this study, a phosphonium salt is introduced as a proton shuttle to help resolve this limitation, resulting in high NH3 production rates and demonstrated continuous operation for more than 3 days.
