Oxygen reduction reaction mechanism and kinetics on M-NxCyand M@N-C active sites present in model M-N-C catalysts under alkaline and acidic conditions

Ricardo Sgarbi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance and stability of Fe-N-C and Co-N-C catalysts in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), with atomically dispersed Fe-N(x)C(y) sites showing the highest activity in acidic media and Fe@N-C core-shell sites exhibiting maximum mass activity in alkaline media. The activity of main suspected active sites (M-N(x)C(y)and M@N-C) was discussed based on the known physical-chemical properties of the catalysts, highlighting the role of adequate energy binding and synergistic effects for enhancing catalytic performance.

Fe-N-C Electrocatalysts' Durability: Effects of Single Atoms' Mobility and Clustering

Kavita Kumar et al.

Summary: Second pyrolysis of Fe-N-C catalysts leads to larger mesopore size, higher iron content, and N-pyridinic moieties, resulting in improved ORR activity and selectivity. Aging morphology of catalysts varies significantly depending on whether they underwent a second pyrolysis, with Fe-clusters formation and partial corrosion observed in Fe-HT2 after load cycling aging at 80 degrees C. No clustering was observed at 60 degrees C, suggesting potential guidelines for enhancing stability of Fe-N-C materials.

Relevant Properties of Carbon Support Materials in Successful Fe-N-C Synthesis for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction: Study of Carbon Blacks and Biomass-Based Carbons

Julia Huelstede et al.

Summary: This study reveals the significance of carbon support for the successful incorporation of Fe-N-related active sites. Carbon supports with low surface areas, amorphous carbon, and mesopores contribute to the improved oxygen reduction reaction activity. Overall, phosphoric acid activated biomass is identified as a novel and sustainable carbon support for the formation of Fe-N-x sites.

Identification of durable and non-durable FeNx sites in Fe-N-C materials for proton exchange membrane fuel cells

Jingkun Li et al.

Summary: Fe-N-C materials show promise as an alternative to platinum in acidic polymer fuel cells, but limited understanding of their operando degradation hinders rational approaches to improved durability. Two distinct FeNx sites in the catalysts degrade differently during the oxygen reduction reaction, with one site substantially contributing after 50 hours of operation.

Carbon corrosion mechanism on nitrogen-doped carbon support - A density functional theory study

Yunqi Li et al.

Summary: In this work, density functional theory calculations were used to investigate the mechanism of carbon corrosion on nitrogen-doped carbon support, determining the most energetically preferred mechanism and providing theoretical insights and design guidelines for optimizing carbon materials. Abundance of nitrogen moieties aggravated carbon corrosion, while specific types of graphitic N and pyridinic N were found to improve carbon corrosion resistance. The control of nitrogen concentration was highlighted as necessary in designing optimized carbon materials.
