Invasive Candidiasis Species Distribution and Trends, United States, 2009-2017

Emily E. Ricotta et al.

Summary: The study found that the incidence of invasive candidiasis (IC) in the United States is relatively stable, primarily caused by Candida albicans, while nonbloodstream IC is on the rise.

Distribution of invasive fungal infections: Molecular epidemiology, etiology, clinical conditions, diagnosis and risk factors: A 3-year experience with 490 patients under intensive care

Zeinab Borjian Boroujeni et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, causative agents, and risk factors of invasive fungal infections (IFIs) in a tertiary health center. Among 1477 patients suspected of systemic fungal infections, confirmed cases of IFI included non-albicans Candida and other invasive saprophytic fungal infections, with hematologic malignancies and diabetes mellitus being common underlying diseases. The increased frequency of invasive candidiasis with non-albicans agents suggests new perspectives in IFI epidemiology and treatment.

Azole Susceptibility Profiles of More than 9,000 Clinical Yeast Isolates Belonging to 40 Common and Rare Species

Marie Desnos-Ollivier et al.

Summary: Invasive yeast infections are a global public health issue with limited antifungal treatment options. Antifungal susceptibility profiles of 9,319 clinical isolates in France over 17 years showed high susceptibility of common species like Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, and Candida parapsilosis to azoles, while Candida glabrata and Pichia kudriavzevii exhibited decreased susceptibility. Furthermore, the study provided valuable information on azole susceptibility of rare and emerging yeast species like Clavispora lusitaniae, Saprochaete clavata, and others.

Fungaemia due to rare yeasts in paediatric intensive care units: A prospective study

Harsimran Kaur et al.

Summary: During the study period, rare yeasts accounted for a significant portion of yeast isolates in paediatric ICUs, with neonates acquiring fungaemia earlier than non-neonates. Common rare yeasts isolated included Wickerhamomyces anomalus and Candida utilis, with azole, echinocandin and amphotericin B resistance rates of 9.1%, 1.02% and 1.02% respectively. Overall mortality rate was 65.3%, indicating the urgent need to control the spread of rare yeasts causing fungaemia in children.

Candida auris: Epidemiology, Diagnosis, Pathogenesis, Antifungal Susceptibility, and Infection Control Measures to Combat the Spread of Infections in Healthcare Facilities

Suhail Ahmad et al.

Summary: Candida auris is a recently recognized yeast that is often multidrug-resistant and has become a significant fungal pathogen in healthcare facilities due to its ability to cause invasive infections and outbreaks. Its resistance to cleaning procedures and ability to easily contaminate the environment have led to major outbreaks in many countries.

No Impact of Fluconazole to Echinocandins Replacement as First-Line Therapy on the Epidemiology of Yeast Fungemia (Hospital-Driven Active Surveillance, 2004-2017, Paris, France)

Stephane Bretagne et al.

Summary: The replacement of fluconazole by echinocandins as the first-line therapy for yeast-related fungemia did not lead to a change in global mortality rates, regardless of the species involved and antifungal susceptibility profiles. Other factors need to be identified to improve the prognosis of yeast-related fungemia.

Risk Factors and Outcomes of Non-albicans Candida Bloodstream Infection in Patients with Candidemia at Siriraj Hospital-Thailand's Largest National Tertiary Referral Hospital

Chaiyapong Ngamchokwathana et al.

Summary: This study found that there was no significant difference in mortality between patients with non-albicans Candida candidemia and those with C. albicans candidemia, but patients with C. tropicalis candidemia had higher risk factors such as chronic liver disease, neutropenia, and male gender. High resistance of C. tropicalis to fluconazole suggests caution in using it for empirical antifungal treatment in these patients.

Summary: The study found high in vitro susceptibility of C. pelliculosa to antifungals, with common symptoms including fever, cyanosis, polypnea, hypoactivity, and apnea. Monitoring unusual strains isolated from immunodeficient hosts is crucial in preventing possible outbreaks.
