The Impact of Photosensitizer Selection on Bactericidal Efficacy Of PDT against Cariogenic Biofilms: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Mauricio Italo Silva Teofilo et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the bactericidal efficacy of different photosensitizers against caries-related biofilms, finding that TBO, MBO, curcumin, and Photogem showed significant bacterial reduction effects. Methodological standardization remains a challenge in determining the most effective photosensitizer for PDT in caries treatment. Further clinical studies are needed for conclusive results.

Immobilization of alkyl-pterin photosensitizer on silicon surfaces through in situ SN2 reaction as suitable approach for photodynamic inactivation of Staphylococcus aureus

Maria Noel Urrutia et al.

Summary: This study successfully immobilized pterin moieties on silicon substrates through a nucleophilic substitution reaction, with a higher proportion of the N-derivative, retaining their photochemical properties and inhibiting Staphylococcus aureus growth under irradiation. The results suggest the potential for modification of various materials with photosensitive surfaces having microbiological self-cleaning properties.

Enhanced photodynamic inactivation for Gram-negative bacteria by branched polyethylenimine-containing nanoparticles under visible light irradiation

Qian Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a chlorine-loaded polyethyleneimine-based micelle photosensitizer was constructed for enhanced photoinactivation activities on Gram-negative bacteria through electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions between nanoparticles and the bacterial surface. The light-triggered generation of reactive oxygen species caused irreversible damage to the bacterial outer membrane, achieving enhanced bactericidal efficiency. This antimicrobial alternative holds great potential for human healthcare and environmental remediation.

Summary: The extract and photosensitizer-enriched fraction of Tripterygium wilfordii showed effective antimicrobial photodynamic treatment (APDT) effects, particularly against Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Candida albicans. Additionally, the photosensitizers were able to induce intracellular ROS production and showed strong APDT activity against skin pathogens like Staphylococcus epidermidis and Streptococcus pyogenes. Overall, the use of TWE and TW-F5 in APDT was found to be successful in controlling pathogenic bacteria.

Antimicrobial Photodynamic Inactivation Affects the Antibiotic Susceptibility of Enterococcus spp. Clinical Isolates in Biofilm and Planktonic Cultures

Agata Wozniak et al.

Summary: Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis are opportunistic pathogens that can cause a variety of nosocomial infections. E. faecium belongs to the group of ESKAPE microbes, which are difficult to treat due to their resistance to antibiotics. Antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation (aPDI) has shown to significantly impact the survival rate of the bacteria, with different synergy testing results observed between strains and methods. The effectiveness of aPDI in resensitizing bacteria to antibiotics presents great potential for treating infections caused by multidrug-resistant strains.
