Is e-cigarette use in non-smoking young adults associated with later smoking? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Jasmine N. Khouja et al.

Summary: The study found that young non-smokers who use e-cigarettes are more likely to start smoking later on, with strong evidence supporting the association. However, the evidence is limited by reliance on self-report measures and lack of consideration for nicotine content, requiring further research to explore this relationship.

Use of E-cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products and Progression to Daily Cigarette Smoking

John P. Pierce et al.

Summary: Young people who try e-cigarettes and multiple other tobacco products, and start before the age of 18, are strongly associated with the risk of later daily cigarette smoking. The recent increase in e-cigarette use may reverse the decline in smoking among young adults in the US.

Toward a More Comprehensive Index of Youth Cigarette Smoking: Average Number of Cigarettes Smoked per Day among Students in the United States over Two Decades

Michelle T. Bover Manderski et al.

Summary: The study found that while the smoking prevalence among US high school students has decreased over the past two decades, smoking intensity has remained relatively stable, indicating an increased rejection of smoking among youth, particularly within smoking frequency groups. It is noteworthy that racial/ethnic disparities in smoking intensity are hidden when using prevalence-only measures.
