Chemical transformation and dissociation of amino acids on metal sulfide surface: Insights from DFT into the effect of surface vacancies on alanine-sphalerite system

Abolfazl Alizadeh Sahraei et al.

Summary: The study revealed that removal of single sulfur or zinc atom on the sphalerite surface led to surface reconstruction by forming favorable local bonds, while the presence of double neighboring congruent vacancies altered the adsorption configuration to more complicated modes. In the most stable configuration, alanine was dissociatively adsorbed on the surface with a tridentate bond formed with two zinc atoms, showing significantly higher affinity than the defect-free surface. Additionally, in a special case with two Zn and S vacancies, alanine underwent a chemical transformation from neutral to zwitterionic form through an intramolecular dissociation reaction.

Engineering highly active Cd1-xZnxS nanopopcorns via zinc blende/wurtzite phase junctions for enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution without a co-catalyst

Xiaosheng Guo et al.

Summary: Rational structure design of semiconductor photocatalysts plays a significant role in enhancing their sunlight-driven hydrogen-evolution performance. In this study, Cd1-xZnxS nanopopcorns with zinc blende/wurtzite phase junctions were synthesized using excess thioacetamide (TAA), showing improved visible-light photocatalytic H-2 evolution activity and a high apparent quantum yield. The results indicate that the Cd1-xZnxS samples with excess TAA not only enhance light absorption and hydrophilicity, but also promote the separation and migration of photoinduced electron-hole pairs due to the presence of type-II ZB/WZ phase junctions.
