Modeling the chemo-mechanical behavior of all-solid-state batteries: a review.

Donald Bistri et al.

Summary: Solid-state batteries are considered a promising technology for next-generation batteries due to their superior properties, but commercialization depends on resolving critical chemical and mechanical stability issues. Accurate modeling of these systems is crucial for material selection and operational parameters. Key challenges in solid-state batteries include dendrite growth, interphase formation, and phase damage, leading to capacity fade and safety concerns.

Visualization and Control of Chemically Induced Crack Formation in All-Solid-State Lithium-Metal Batteries with Sulfide Electrolyte

Misae Otoyama et al.

Summary: The reduction reaction at the interface between the SE and lithium metal is the primary cause of short-circuiting in all-solid-state batteries. The combination of reduction-expansion-cracking of LPS at the new interfaces eventually leads to the formation of large cracks and short-circuiting.

Thin Cation-Exchange Layers Enable High-Current-Density Bipolar Membrane Electrolyzers via Improved Water Transport

Sebastian Z. Oener et al.

Summary: With appropriate water dissociation catalysts, bipolar membranes can efficiently split water molecules into H+ and OH-. However, the challenge lies in transporting water through the membranes against the outward flow of hydrated ions, limiting current densities to around 0.5 A.cm(-2). Efforts are being made to improve water transport in order to achieve high-current-density operation for various applications.

Interfacial Atomistic Mechanisms of Lithium Metal Stripping and Plating in Solid-State Batteries

Menghao Yang et al.

Summary: This study conducts atomistic modeling for lithium stripping and plating on solid electrolytes, observing the initiation of interface failure with the formation of nano-sized pores, and the effects of interface structures, lithium diffusion, adhesion energy, and applied pressure on interface failure during lithium cycling. The simulations map the parameter space of applied pressures and interfacial adhesion energies that inhibit interface failure, providing guidance for the selection of solid-state cells and predicting optimal solid interfaces for future research and development of solid-state Li-metal batteries.

Linking void and interphase evolution to electrochemistry in solid-state batteries using operando X-ray tomography

John A. Lewis et al.

Summary: The study using operando synchrotron X-ray computed microtomography reveals the evolution of lithium/solid-state electrolyte interfaces during battery cycling, showing how void formation, interphase growth, and volumetric changes affect cell behavior. Loss of contact at the interface between lithium and the solid-state electrolyte is found to be the primary cause of cell failure, while redox-active interphase and global volume changes upon charge also play significant roles in determining cell performance. These findings provide insights into the impact of chemo-mechanical phenomena on cell behavior, aiding in the development of solid-state batteries.

In Situ Electrode Stress Monitoring: An Effective Approach to Study the Electrochemical Behavior of a Lithium Metal Anode

Peng Liang et al.

Summary: The research studied the stress evolution of a practical lithium metal anode during lithium plating/stripping for the first time, proving a failure mechanism of the Li metal anode. The continuous Li metal volume change during the electrochemical reaction led to dramatic stress increase and irreversible volume expansion due to the formation of porous Li and dead Li. This approach can be adopted for in situ investigation of electrodes with large volume variations for insights into mechanical effects of energy storage, short circuit detection, and safe battery design.

Microstructure and Pressure-Driven Electrodeposition Stability in Solid-State Batteries

Ankit Verma et al.

Summary: The stability of interfacial deposition at the Li-metal-solid electrolyte interface in all solid-state batteries is influenced by the stress-transport-electrochemistry coupling and the polycrystalline/amorphous solid electrolyte architecture. The study identifies the optimal solid electrolyte microstructure with desirable ionic conductivity and elastic modulus for superior transport and strength. Experimental results show that external stack pressure has a negligible impact on reaction kinetics, with electrolyte transport overpotentials playing a key role in electrodeposition stability.

In Situ Strain Measurement in Solid-State Li-Ion Battery Electrodes

Behrad Koohbor et al.

Summary: This study investigates the chemo-mechanical response in working electrodes of solid-state Li-ion batteries, correlating mechanical deformations with electrochemical performance and damage mechanisms. The measured strains are large enough to induce cracking in the solid electrolyte, and the chemo-mechanical strains developed in electrodes of a solid-state battery are less reversible than those of liquid electrolyte batteries.
