On the use of Cauchy integral formula for the embedding problem of discrete-time Markov chains

Virtue U. Ekhosuehi

Summary: This article discusses an important issue in manpower planning, which is obtaining a transition matrix over a short time interval using only a transition matrix over a longer time interval. The article derives a new representation for embeddable stochastic matrices by using Cauchy's integral formula and provides new conditions for embeddability and regularization.

Introduction, analysis and asymptotic behavior of a multi-level manpower planning model in a continuous time setting under potential department contraction

V. A. Dimitriou et al.

Summary: The study introduces a mathematical model for multi-level manpower planning, analyzing the impact of organizing personnel into homogeneous groups within and among departments. By modeling the system with differential equations and conducting asymptotic analysis, it is possible to predict future department structures and identify departments that may require restructuring or merging.

Open Markov Chains: Cumulant Dynamics, Fluctuations and Correlations

Raul Salgado-Garcia

Summary: This work introduces a model for open Markov chains where non-interacting particles evolve according to Markov chain rules, with varying numbers based on predetermined protocols. The system is described by studying particle populations at each state and establishing rules for their distribution evolution over time. By focusing on the moment generating function, the distribution of particles in the state space can be characterized, with an analysis on the system's ability to reach stationarity under certain conditions. Additionally, the dynamics of the first two cumulants of the particle distribution are explored, providing a simpler technique to extract useful information from the open Markov chain for practical purposes.

Non-Homogeneous Markov Set Systems

P. -C. G. Vassiliou

Summary: This study focuses on Non-Homogeneous Markov Set Systems processes with parameters in intervals. It is proven that under certain conditions, the expected population structure set is compact and convex. Additionally, it is established that with different initial distributions, the expected relative population structures of NHMSS coincide geometrically fast under certain conditions.

Calibration of Transition Intensities for a Multistate Model: Application to Long-Term Care

Manuel L. Esquivel et al.

Summary: A non-homogeneous continuous time Markov chain model for Long-Term Care with five states, calibrated transition intensities based on one step transition probabilities estimated from data, was proposed using data from the 2015 Portuguese National Network of Continuous Care database. Solving numerically Kolmogorov forward differential equations allowed for obtaining continuous time transition probabilities, with assessment of calibration quality using Portuguese life expectancies. Monte Carlo simulation was then used to compute trajectories of the Markov chain process based on reasonable monthly costs for each dependence state, deriving relevant information for model validation and premium calculation.
