Genetic characteristics and pathogenicity of novel reassortant H6 viruses isolated from wild birds in China

Yulei Li et al.

Summary: The study identified seven strains of H6 avian influenza virus from fresh fecal samples collected in wild bird habitats in China. Phylogenetic analysis showed the viruses underwent complex reassortment and acquired genes from both Eurasian and North American lineages. Experimental findings demonstrated that H6 viruses replicate efficiently in mice without pre-adaptation but are not lethal. The importance of continued surveillance of H6 AIVs in nature was underscored.
