Microbial response during treatment of different types of landfill leachate in a semi-aerobic aged refuse biofilter

Peng Wen et al.

Summary: The SAARB demonstrated stable removal of organic matter and nitrogen from different landfill leachates, with microbial communities changing significantly after treatment. Microbial abundance and diversity were most affected by the content of refractory organics in the leachate, with Proteobacteria being the dominant microorganism. This study highlights the potential for optimization and application of SAARB in leachate treatment.

Speciation, contamination, ecological and human health risks assessment of heavy metals in soils dumped with municipal solid wastes

Nihal Gujre et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess soil contamination, ecological and health risks associated with municipal solid waste disposal near a Ramsar site in Assam, India. Heavy metals including chromium, manganese, and zinc were analyzed, with chromium showing higher contamination levels. Speciation analysis revealed different associations with soil fractions for each metal, with chromium posing higher health risks through ingestion.

Heavy metals in leachate, impacted soils and natural soils of different landfills in Malaysia: An alarming threat

Munirah Hussein et al.

Summary: The study concluded that non-sanitary landfills in Malaysia exhibited high levels of heavy metal contamination in both leachate and surface soils, leading to moderate to strong pollution. Factors such as redox conditions, pH, and microbial activities were found to contribute to the rise in metal contents in landfill environments.

The bacterial communities of surface soils from desert sites in the eastern Utah (USA) portion of the Colorado Plateau

Jorge R. Osman et al.

Summary: In desert-like areas of eastern Utah, bacterial community composition is significantly influenced by pH and organic matter concentration, with Proteobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes being the predominant phyla in high-altitude desert soils. The relative abundance of these phyla is correlated with soil pH and organic matter concentration, suggesting their importance in shaping bacterial community structure in these environments.

Microbial dynamics in biogas digesters treating lipid-rich substrates via genome-centric metagenomics

Maria Gaspari et al.

Summary: The response of biogas microbiome to a gradual increase in organic loading rate by supplementing with Na-Oleate led to the formation of three clusters describing microbial behaviors. The dominance of Candidatus Methanoculleus thermohydrogenotrophicum in reactors fed with cattle manure indicated a hydrogenotrophic methanogenic pathway, further enhanced by lipid supplementation. Shift back to solely cattle manure altered microbial dynamics significantly, with a notable increase in a propionate degrader affiliated to the order of Bacteroidales becoming the predominant microorganism.
