Overview of mechanisms and uses of biopesticides

Xiaoman Liu et al.

Summary: Biopesticides have shown to be effective in controlling agricultural diseases and insects. They are sourced from natural products and microorganisms, making them safer for non-target organisms and potentially suitable for organic agriculture. In China, biopesticides like Bacillus thuringiensis, Jinggangmycin, pyrethrins and brassinolide are being developed as alternatives to chemical pesticides.

The Use of Microalgae and Cyanobacteria in the Improvement of Agricultural Practices: A Review on Their Biofertilising, Biostimulating and Biopesticide Roles

Ana L. Goncalves

Summary: The increase in global population has led to a higher demand for food supplies, requiring improved agricultural productivities. One alternative for sustainable agriculture is the use of biologically-based compounds. Microalgae and cyanobacteria are gaining attention for their potential as essential nutrient sources and metabolites that can improve crop yields.

Efficacy of three biopesticides against cotton pests under field conditions in South Africa

Lawrence N. Malinga et al.

Summary: The study found that Karate was most effective in controlling leafhoppers, biopesticides enhanced control of aphids, and chemical insecticides were more effective in controlling whiteflies. Biopesticides and chemical insecticides can be combined for future integrated pest management programs.

Growth, biostimulant and biopesticide activity of the MACC-1 Chlorella strain cultivated outdoors in inorganic medium and wastewater

Karolfna Ranglova et al.

Summary: The use of wastewater for microalgae cultivation reduces costs and enhances photosynthetic activity. While Chlorella vulgaris cultured in wastewater showed no biostimulant activity, it exhibited significantly higher antibacterial and antifungal activities compared to cultivation in BG-11 medium.

Saponin production from Quillaja genus species. An insight into its applications and biology

Fernando Guerra et al.

Summary: The Quillaja genus is endemic to South America and represented by two species, Quillaja saponaria and Quillaja brasiliensis. These forest tree species are known for their production of saponins, which have economic importance in various industrial applications. Research has focused on Q. saponaria and advances have been made in understanding saponin biosynthesis pathways, chemical properties, and potential for genetic improvement programs.
