Common garden experiments to study local adaptation need to account for population structure

Pierre de Villemereuil et al.

Summary: Common garden experiments are valuable for studying local adaptation without the confounding effect of phenotypic plasticity. The Q(ST) - F-ST comparison framework is commonly used to test the influence of local adaptation on phenotypic divergence between populations. However, the assumptions underlying the equality between Q(ST) and F-ST may not hold in more complex population structures.

Do calcium oxalate crystals protect against herbivory?

Elder Antonio Sousa Paiva

Summary: While calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystals are believed to offer protection against herbivory due to their shape and indigestible nature, their efficiency in doing so is low. Insects with chewing mouthparts have a semipermeable structure that protects their midgut from damage caused by crystals. The purely mechanical action of CaOx crystals, similar to other inert materials like sand, limits their effectiveness in protecting plants from herbivores, making experimental evidence necessary to support their defensive claims.
