ForestGEO: Understanding forest diversity and dynamics through a global observatory network

Stuart J. Davies et al.

Summary: ForestGEO is a network of scientists and long-term forest dynamics plots that aims to advance understanding of forest diversity and dynamics, as well as strengthen global capacity for forest science research. With large-scale plot dimensions, comprehensive censusing, and investigation of various biotic and abiotic drivers, ForestGEO provides a holistic view of forest functioning. Through extensive research, ForestGEO has made significant contributions in areas such as species coexistence and diversity, and ecosystem functioning, while also highlighting the need for further research to predict the impacts of climate change and other stressors on forest diversity and function.

Permafrost thaw in boreal peatlands is rapidly altering forest community composition

Katherine D. Dearborn et al.

Summary: The study found that permafrost thaw is leading to changes in forest composition and structure in boreal peatlands, with significant variations governed by permafrost presence and organic layer thickness. Mortality of black spruce exceeds recruitment, while recruitment of larch is higher than mortality, especially in permafrost-free wetlands with mineral soil near the surface. These trends suggest a shift from spruce-dominated plateaus to larch-dominated wetlands as permafrost thaw progresses.

Chemically informed analyses of metabolomics mass spectrometry data with Qemistree

Anupriya Tripathi et al.

Summary: Qemistree is a data exploration strategy based on the hierarchical organization of molecular fingerprints predicted from fragmentation spectra, allowing mass spectrometry data to be represented in the context of sample metadata and chemical ontologies. The software pipeline is freely available to the microbiome and metabolomics communities as a QIIME2 plugin and a global natural products social molecular networking workflow, providing tools to compare metabolomics samples across different experimental conditions and to visualize chemical diversity in a collection of samples.
