Selective logging reduces body size in omnivorous and frugivorous tropical forest birds

Simone Messina et al.

Summary: Selective logging in tropical forests leads to shifts in species abundances. Body size and body condition are important fitness metrics that may be affected by habitat degradation. Our study found that frugivorous and omnivorous birds had reduced body size in selectively logged forest, with no evidence of selective removal of individuals based on sex differences or post-fledging body size. The study also showed that the body condition index (BCI) of birds was affected by climatic conditions, but not by logging. Overall, our results suggest that body size is a valuable metric to assess the impact of logging on forest birds and highlight the need for improved silvicultural practices.

Structure of Microhabitats Used by Microcebus rufus Across a Heterogeneous Landscape

Veronarindra Ramananjato et al.

Summary: The study found that the rufous mouse lemur prefers microhabitats with high density of small to medium-sized trees/shrubs in primary forests, and with high density of small plants and one liana in other forest types. Additionally, secondary forests and forest fragments had significantly lower tree/shrub density. This variation in microhabitat use may provide opportunities for the lemurs to live in disturbed habitats, but also expose them to additional threats that could affect their long-term survival.
