Lava flows of Mt Etna, Italy: the 2019 eruption within the context of the last two decades (1999-2019)

Emanuela De Beni et al.

Summary: UAVs are a useful tool for monitoring natural hazards, especially in volcanic areas where they allow wider observations of eruptive behavior. The SfM technique enables the rapid acquisition of images and digital models of lava flows, aiding in estimating eruption characteristics. Through UAV surveys at Mount Etna, the morpho-structural evolution of fissures and the accumulation of lava flows can be monitored, providing the most recent updates on lava flows.

Tracking Magma Storage: New Perspectives From 40 Years (1980-2020) of Ground Deformation Source Modeling on Etna Volcano

Alessandro Bonaccorso et al.

Summary: One key issue in active volcanoes is to study the position and characteristics of magma reservoirs over time in order to understand crustal magma transfer, define volcanic hazard, and plan mitigation strategies. Mount Etna volcano has been monitored for over 40 years through ground deformation measurements, mainly focusing on single eruptions and their preceding recharge phases. This study presents four decades of recharge periods modeled using the same measurements and methods, tracking magma storage locations during recharging and highlighting a deepening pressure source before explosive eruptions.
