Antibiotic prescribing in patients with COVID-19: rapid review and meta-analysis

Bradley J. Langford et al.

Summary: The study estimated that approximately three-quarters of patients with COVID-19 receive antibiotic treatment, which is significantly higher than the estimated prevalence of bacterial co-infection. This suggests a potential for high rates of unnecessary antibiotic use in patients with COVID-19.

Antimicrobial stewardship perspectives from a New York City hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic: Challenges and opportunities

Christine J. Kubin et al.

Summary: During the early weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic, New York City faced challenges in antimicrobial stewardship programs due to diagnostic and therapeutic uncertainties, healthcare resource shortages, and the lack of effective antivirals. Effective communication, education, and inventory control were essential tools to optimize existing resources in the face of the pandemic. Antimicrobial stewardship programs can learn from each other's experiences to better prepare for future outbreaks.

A point prevalence survey to assess antibiotic prescribing in patients hospitalized with confirmed and suspected coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)

Sock Hoon Tan et al.

Summary: A point prevalence survey was conducted in COVID-19 wards at two centers in Singapore to describe antibiotic utilization and evaluate antibiotic appropriateness. Results showed low prevalence of antibiotic use among confirmed and suspected COVID-19 patients at these two centers, but a significant proportion of inappropriate antibiotic use was identified.

Summary: The study found a high frequency of empiric antibiotic treatment in severe COVID-19 patients upon admission, with VAP and BSI being the most common hospital-acquired infections, caused by Enterobacteriaceae and coagulase negative staphylococci, respectively.

Characterization of Bacterial and Fungal Infections in Hospitalized Patients With Coronavirus Disease 2019 and Factors Associated With Health Care-Associated Infections

Christine J. Kubin et al.

Summary: In this study, 3028 adult patients hospitalized with COVID-19 were evaluated, with 17% of them experiencing secondary infections and 12% of them classified as health care-associated infections (HAIs). Gram-negative bacteria and fungi were the most common pathogens causing HAIs, and antibiotic resistance increased with prolonged hospital stays. Intensive care unit stay, mechanical ventilation, and steroid use were identified as risk factors for HAIs.
