Characterization of Bacterial and Fungal Infections in Hospitalized Patients With Coronavirus Disease 2019 and Factors Associated With Health Care-Associated Infections

Summary: In this study, 3028 adult patients hospitalized with COVID-19 were evaluated, with 17% of them experiencing secondary infections and 12% of them classified as health care-associated infections (HAIs). Gram-negative bacteria and fungi were the most common pathogens causing HAIs, and antibiotic resistance increased with prolonged hospital stays. Intensive care unit stay, mechanical ventilation, and steroid use were identified as risk factors for HAIs.
