Incidence of co-infections and superinfections in hospitalized patients with COVID-19: a retrospective cohort study

Carolina Garcia-Vidal et al.

Summary: The study found that co-infections and superinfections in hospitalized COVID-19 patients were relatively low compared to other viral pandemics. Patients experienced worse outcomes after hospital-acquired superinfections occurred.

Few bacterial co-infections but frequent empiric antibiotic use in the early phase of hospitalized patients with COVID-19: results from a multicentre retrospective cohort study in The Netherlands

Zara Karami et al.

Summary: The study found that bacterial co-infections are rare in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, yet the use of antibiotics is prevalent. Caution should be exercised in antibiotic use to reduce overuse in the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Antibiotic prescribing in patients with COVID-19: rapid review and meta-analysis

Bradley J. Langford et al.

Summary: The study estimated that approximately three-quarters of patients with COVID-19 receive antibiotic treatment, which is significantly higher than the estimated prevalence of bacterial co-infection. This suggests a potential for high rates of unnecessary antibiotic use in patients with COVID-19.

Antimicrobial stewardship perspectives from a New York City hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic: Challenges and opportunities

Christine J. Kubin et al.

Summary: During the early weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic, New York City faced challenges in antimicrobial stewardship programs due to diagnostic and therapeutic uncertainties, healthcare resource shortages, and the lack of effective antivirals. Effective communication, education, and inventory control were essential tools to optimize existing resources in the face of the pandemic. Antimicrobial stewardship programs can learn from each other's experiences to better prepare for future outbreaks.

A multicenter analysis of the clinical microbiology and antimicrobial usage in hospitalized patients in the US with or without COVID-19

Laura Puzniak et al.

Summary: There are differences in pathogens, antimicrobial usage, and healthcare utilization between hospitalized COVID-19 patients and non-COVID-19 patients in the US. Despite similar rates of non-COVID-19 pathogens, COVID-19 patients have higher rates of hospital-onset infections and antimicrobial usage, as well as longer hospital stays.

Bacterial Superinfections Among Persons With Coronavirus Disease 2019: A Comprehensive Review of Data From Postmortem Studies

Cornelius J. Clancy et al.

Summary: Research shows that potential bacterial lung superinfections were present in 32% of patients who died with COVID-19, with most of them receiving antimicrobial treatment. The most common pathogens identified in postmortem studies included Acinetobacter baumannii, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Superinfections were rarely the direct cause of death, ranking third behind other factors.

Evolution of Antimicrobial Consumption During the First Wave of COVID-19 Pandemic

Santiago Grau et al.

Summary: The study found an increase in antimicrobial consumption during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic, especially in the ICU. Different antibiotics showed a clear temporal pattern in their usage. Availability of updated protocols and antimicrobial stewardship programs are essential to optimize these outcomes.
