Piper betle (L): Recent Review of Antibacterial and Antifungal Properties, Safety Profiles, and Commercial Applications

Ni Made Dwi Mara Widyani Nayaka et al.

Summary: Piper betle is a popular medicinal plant in Asia, with recent studies showing its potent antibacterial and antifungal properties. Extracts and essential oils from betel leaves can inhibit microbial growth, including multidrug-resistant strains, and display high efficacy against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria as well as fungi. The combination of betel leaves with antibiotics has shown to enhance antibacterial properties, providing potential for the development of value-added products.

Effects of Growing Substrate and Nitrogen Fertilization on the Chemical Composition and Bioactive Properties of Centaurea raphanina ssp. mixta (DC.) Runemark

Spyridon A. Petropoulos et al.

Summary: The use of nitrogen fertilizer rates and growth substrate composition was found to significantly affect the nutritional value, chemical composition, and bioactive properties of Centaurea raphanina ssp. mixta plants. Soil with 200 ppm of nitrogen showed to be the most beneficial for fat, protein, and carbohydrate content, while peat/perlite-grown plants with the same nitrogen level had the highest content of tocopherols. Different treatments showed varied levels of fatty acids, phenolic compounds, and antihemolytic and antifungal activities, suggesting that the selection of growth substrate and nitrogen application can regulate the bioactive properties of the plant species and increase its commercial value.

Evaluation of effectiveness aqueous extract for some leaves of wild edible plants in Egypt as anti-fungal and anti-toxigenic

Tarek A. El-Desouky

Summary: This study investigated the antifungal and antitoxigenic activity of aqueous extracts from three wild edible plants. The results showed that Portulaca oleracea extract had the highest phenolic and flavonoids content, leading to the greatest inhibition zone against fungi. Additionally, the extracts showed inhibitory effects on the formation of aflatoxin B-1 and ochratoxin A, with Portulaca oleracea demonstrating the highest inhibition percentages. Overall, these plants provide effective compounds for antifungal and antitoxigenic purposes.
